Resources for teachers, by teachers

By Cortney Steffens

The titles of my blog posts usually begin with Common Core Connections.  At first a post on homework planners for the Xperia table might not make sense.  However, if you think about it, students will be better equipped to meet the CCSS if they are organized and actually do the reinforcement work and projects teachers assign.  I taught first grade for 10 years and homework completion was never really a problem. Now that I teach third grade, I have entered a whole new dimension of “The Land of the Lost Homework” where creative excuses for incomplete homework abound. So how does one get their students more organized? In a one-to-one tablet classroom, or a BYOD school environment, students will have everything they need on their device to complete their work. Students can no longer say they did not know what to do when you load one of  these two apps onto your Xperia tablet.
In this post I introduce you to two academic planning apps, Everstudent and Myhomework Student Planner. Both apps have simplistic designs that allow new assignments to be inputted easily.

Everstudent
My first thought when working with the Everstudent app, was that it is very appropriate for older students such as 4th grade or higher.  Students need to have Evernote accounts to fully benefit from this app.  First, students simply create a semester and then create classes within that semester.  Then, classes can be color-coded for visual discrimination.

When a teacher assigns a task, students simply type in the new assignment for that day. Students can move to another day by using the right arrow at the top of the screen or by tapping the date and a sliding date picker pops up (this needs to be enabled in the preferences).

The best part is that all of the assignments saved in Everstudent sync to the students’ Evernotes accounts.  The Evernote accounts provide access to the assignments on ANY computer when you sign into the Web site or download the program.  The assignments appear in a note and appear as a checklist that can be checked off when the assignment is completed.

Myhomework Student Planner
Myhomework Student Planner is the other app that I thought would work well with students of all ages.  It has an easy to use interface that has more options than Everstudent.  Students can:

  • Check the calendar for future or past assignments,

  • Add new assignments by class and type,

  • Place a priority category to an assignment,

  • And see upcoming and late assignments.

Like Everstudent, students using Myhomework Student Planner can access their homework via the Web site so homework can be accessed from any computer. Students will have absolutely no excuses!

Teachers can join Teachers.io and upload homework assignments to that site that will sync to student accounts.  Every student will see the homework when the app on their Xperia syncs.

The bottomline is that organized students are productive students.  Productive students can focus on the work at hand instead of calling classmates to find out the day’s homework.  This makes students, parents, and especially teachers happy!
