Popout! The Tale of Peter Rabbit is an electronic book/app which has enough of the classic illustrations, vocal performance, soft piano background music, and story to please Beatrix Potter traditionalists AND enough interactivity to engage and enthrall the young ones just being introduced to the work of Beatrix Potter as well.
Some interactions built into the app are reminiscent of a paper-based pop-up book. There are little tabs which can slide with the swipe of a finger to "animate" the characters or objects as if in a printed book. Other interactivity is object-based, like clicking on falling leaves or berries and seeing enlarged versions floating on the screen, Berries gathered in this manner can be squished with a fingertip too. Rocking or tilting the tablet will rock some items in the illustrations as well. All of these interactive features are gentle and fit well with the style of the book.
In "Read to Me" mode the words are highlighted as the narrator speaks each word in her calm, soothing voice. There are soft sounds of birds, breezes and other environmental sounds in addition to the piano background music which can be muted if so desired. In both modes, touching a word will have the word spoken, a great support for young readers or almost-readers.
At $4.99 this book is more expensive than some other book apps, but it is worth it for the experience and the introduction to a classic piece of children's literature. Loud Crow Interactive has found the near-perfect balance between the words and story, illustrations, and interactive elements in this app which may become a classic all its own.
